HANUMAN JAYANTI
Lord Hanuman is a passionate devotee of Lord Rama. He is a central character of a holy book Ramayana and its various versions. He is also been mentioned in other holy texts like Mahabharata. Lord Hanuman also supported Lord Rama in his war against demon Ravana. Many texts represent him as a reincarnation of Lord Shiva. Lord Hanuman is the god of strength, celibacy and knowledge. Lord Hanuman applied sindoor over his body for Lord Rama’s long life. The name hanuman means disfigured jaw in Sanskrit. Although Lord Hanuman is bramchri he has one son named Makardhwaja. According to Hindu mythology, Hanuman is the son of Kesari and Anjani and was born to them after years of penance. Lord Hanuman is worshipped by thousands of people and is called by different names by his followers. Those names include Bajrang Bali, sankatmochan, dukhbhanjan, Maruti Mandan and Anjaneya. Hanuman Jayanti is celebrated in commemoration of the birth of Lord Hanuman who is also known as one of Lord Shiva’s incarnations. Hanuman Jayanti is celebrated on the full moon day during the Chaitra month according to the Hindu calendar. This year, Hanuman Jayanti is falling on Wednesday, April 8. This festival is celebrated on different days in different parts of India. In most states of India, the festival is observed either in Chaitra or in Vaishakha, while in a few states like Kerala and Tamil Nadu, it is celebrated in Dhanu. On this auspicious day devotees of Lord Hanuman celebrate him and seek his protection and blessings. Devotees go to temples and offer Lord Hanuman religious sweets or a basket of fruits. The devotees receive Prasad by the temple priests as sweets, flowers, coconuts, tilak, sacred ash and Ganga jal. People also celebrate him on this day by reciting multifarious cultural shlokas and prayers like the Hanuman Chalisa and reading Holy Scriptures like the Ramayana and Mahabharata.
